Inspired by the presentations and conversations at the World Congress on Adult Guardianship, upon his return to the United States attorney Thomas F. Coleman sent a letter to the Chief Justice of California. The letter encourages the Honorable Tani Cantil-Sakauye to use her positions as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Chairperson of the Judicial Council to initiate actions designed to improve the administration of justice in general and limited conservatorship proceedings in probate courts in California. The letter was accompanied by a report titled Administrative Steps to Improve California's Probate Conservatorship System. It explains five steps that can and should be taken within the Judicial Branch to review and improve probate conservatorship proceedings, including a thorough review of how judges and attorneys are implementing the mandate to explore alternatives to conservatorships. Supported decision-making, so long as it is done in a safe and legal manner, should be routinely considered as an alternative to an order of conservatorship.
